Tell Me pedagogy
Reading Teachers = Reading Pupils promotes the pedagogy of Aidan Chambers as outlined in his book Tell Me: Children, Reading and Talk (2011). We encourage all teachers to read Aidan’s book, familiarise themselves with his approach to booktalk and put it into action in the classroom in order to promote reading for pleasure.
What is Tell Me?
Tell Me is a non-hierarchical approach to booktalk that places the teacher and pupil on an equal footing and enables them to engage in a shared contemplation of a book to come to a deeper understanding than they could have done alone.
Tell Me discussion is shaped around sharing likes, dislikes, puzzles and patterns (patterns within the novel, links to real life and links to other books) and, when used with complete texts, supports reading for pleasure.
In our RTRP Independent Partner groups, teachers use this framework to discuss children’s books before repeating their discussions with their classes.
